Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. was shot multiple times on Sunday evening during an attempted robbery, law enforcement sources told News4. The team confirmed the news in a statement Sunday night.

Robinson Jr.'s injuries from the shooting are not life-threatening, sources close to the situation told NBC Sports Washington's JP Finlay.

The incident occurred in Northeast Washington on the 1000 block of H Street at around 5:30 p.m., D.C. police said.

The suspects allegedly tried to take Robinson Jr.'s Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, upon which a scuffle ensued and the shots were fired, according to authorities. Robinson Jr. was taken to an area hospital following the incident.

Police said a gun was recovered on scene and that they were looking for two juveniles described as Black, with shoulder-length dreadlocks and a medium complexion wearing a black or brown shirt with yellow smiley faces. Anyone with information is asked to contact D.C. police.

The Commanders said in a statement Sunday night that team officials were "on-site" with Robinson Jr.

"I just got done visiting w/Brian. He is in good spirits and wanted me to thank everyone for their kind words, prayers & support," Head Coach Ron Rivera said in a tweet Sunday. "He wants his teammates to know he appreciates them all for reaching out and he loves them all & will be back soon doing what he does best."

The 23-year-old was selected in the third round of the most recent NFL Draft and, after a strong preseason, was trending toward a major role in the team's offense during the 2022 regular season.
