Web site value calculation pages. Are they accurate? By Tim Roach September 25, 2009 |

Recently I have been seeing more and more of the "what is your site worth" groups advertising their services. Just for "grins and giggles" I decided to check out several of these sites to see what they say my websites (plus a friends web page) are worth. I will be the first to admit that my site is not fancy nor is it viewed heavily. Especially when compared to the very popular web sites. So I thoroughly expected to see results along the lines of "You have to be kidding . . . this site is so worthless . . . dirt sales for more." Needless to say my expectations were not very high. However, I almost fell out of my chair when I saw some of the allegedly accurate results . . . especially the ones that suggested that my sites have a net worth in the millions. (Oh if only it were true . . . The life I could be leading and the things I could do. But alas I am living on the island of Mindanao not Fantasy Island.) As you will see in the list below there is a huge variation between the "estimates" of each site. The main problem with the groups ability to estimate a realistic value for a web site or page, is that they do not have access to several critical pieces of information. Such as, the sites operating expenses, system access log files, new visitors, returning visitors, what pages are most viewed, income and sales from the site (if any), number of members (where applicable), actual advertising income, etc. Without that information (and more) it would be impossible to give a truly accurate value of a web site. However, there were a few sites which required some relevant detailed information to be entered manually. While I did not take the time to look up and enter all the information, those sites did seem to have the potential to give a more realistic value of web sites and pages (assuming one enters accurate information). However, I am a person that believes a final number means little to nothing if one does not know what methods were used to generate the results. To me it would be nice if all the groups gave a little more detail regarding how they calculate the estimated value of a site. As the saying goes, "Figures don't lie, but liars can figure." As a result I would not put to much stock in the reported value given by any of these sites. Though it is interesting to see what the various groups come up with as a value. Below are several of the sites listed in no particular order, some of the results given, and some of my thoughts But first let me give the actual stats (as of this writing) of the sites I will be using for the test: My business site. Oh . . . before I start listing the sites I should point out that I do not have any affiliation with any of these groups. Also the sites may have changed for better, or worse, since I posted this information. I will try to re-evaluate the groups, add a few new sites and remove dead sites every few months (or years or whenever I get around to it.) ; -) Also each site’s page summary information was copied directly from each site. So with all that said, below are the results I received. http://www.realwebsiteworth.com/ RealWebsiteWorth.com’s page summary: RealWebsiteWorth.com is free service that provides calculations and informations about any website. We are trying to calculate value of site as much realistic as it is possible and give you an estimate for how much you can sell your site. All data (Page Rank, Back Links, Meta Title, Meta Description, Meta Keywords, IP, Site Age, Rank Graphs) is fetched in real-time and using unique algorithm we give you estimated Daily Pageviews, Daily Ads Revenue and Website Worth.
Easy to use. The site gives some interesting information about back links and search engine links. But obviously has some issues regarding the guess on number of hits. http://u2ws.com/ u2ws.com’s page summary: This free tool will analyze your site, and let you know how well it's being monetized, and what value you could sell it for. Get detailed information about websites, like traffic details, web statistics, website estimated value and daily income, rankings, related links, host ip address and more. Our sources include many search engines such as google and yahoo. We also use data from Alexa.
The site Does not appear to subdomains or various .* extensions for instance *.net or blogs or personal web pages. Ironically their first line instruction says: "Enter your domain name in the form below to get estimated valuation on your website or blog." In my opinion, the site needs a lot of work. http://sitevaluecheck.com/ sitevaluecheck.com’s page summary: The easiest and most accurate website quotation estimator on the web!
The page is straight forward and easy to use. The results pages has some interesting, though not overly useful information, about the website / page a bit more detail would be nice. However, the page gives a decent summary. http://mywebsiteworth.com/ mywebsiteworth.com’s page summary: Know Your Website Worth. This free tool will analyze your site, and let you know how well it's being monetized, and what value you could sell it for.
Easy to use but does not give much information other than the price estimate of the site. http://websiteoutlook.com/ websiteoutlook.com’s page summary: Websiteoutlook is the perfect place to evaluate any website. When choosing to buy or sell a website having the proper information about your investment can be crucial to your success. Websiteoutlook is dedicated to finding all pertinent information that may pertain to your personal interest. And it's FREE!
Easy to use. I wish the information was true, especially the daily revenue for TRoach.Net. They give quiet a bit of information, unfortunately the estimates are way off in many of the areas. However, among other things, The page gives a list of country rankings. While I do not know about the accuracy of my site rankings in each country, the list was relatively accurate as what countries most of my site visitors are from. http://www.websitevaluecalculate.com/ websitevaluecalculate.com’s page summary:
What is the value of Your website? Calculate the worth of Your site for free:
A little annoying that they use one of the random number security code fields (especially for those of us that are dyslexic). However, the site does give some useful information like loading time, in bound links, out bound links, etc. http://www.welcomia.com/ www.welcomia.com’s page summary: Checking Google PR | Alexa Rank | Backlinks Checker | Server IP | Domain Creation and Expiration Dates | Estimating Web Traffic | Analysing Potential Google Adsense Income and text Link Value | Check DMOZ Listings | Search Engine Backlinks | Number of Indexed Pages and more. Our tool is Free to Use Anytime by Anybody who want to check your Website Score. Each Score is Saved in the our database for future cases.
The group uses a different format for entering the site to process and the results are very difficult to read. The result page formatting leaves a lot to be desired. The site also has problems processing pages with many out bound links. In my opinion, the site needs a lot of work. http://www.glurk.com glurk.com’s page summary: This free calculator will give you a pretty good estimate of what your website is worth. There are a lot of intangibles that can affect the price of your website, but this will at least give you a starting point. For a more accurate estimate, you can buy a domain name appraisal from a number of companies.
The site asks for a lot of information that would help give an accurate calculation of a web sites actual value. However doing that also makes the page more difficult to use. Plus a general web site/page owner may not have all the information. In this case I just entered the domain and left the defaults to see what would happen. If one takes the time to look up and enter all the information correctly the site has the potential to give fairly accurate estimated site value. http://www.websitevalue.info/ www.websitevalue.info’s page summary:
Welcome to the Website Value Calculator!
Their estimates . . . well . . . this is another one I wish it was true. http://directory.sootle.com/website-worth/ directory.sootle.com/website-worth’s page summary: Enter your full website address like this: www.sootle.com We'll check your backlinks and make our valuation estimate You can copy and paste the produced code into your website when finished. The best part is, we'll automatically update the code when new backlinks are discovered. Thrill and amaze your friends as your website value goes through the roof!
Advertising is a little annoying as one must scroll down to get to the data entry point. Would be nice if some more information was included. They also have an advertising button on your web page that shows your pages value. http://ebizvaluations.com/ ebizvaluations.com’s page summary: This valuation tool follows months of development and research by experts in business valuation, accounting, business brokering and website due diligence, and follows a report prepared for Sitepoint.com, the world's biggest site marketplace: The Ultimate Web Site Valuation Guide.
Requires a lot of information, which makes the site somewhat difficult to use. However by entering the information accurately one will probably get a reasonable value of a web site. http://websitevalued.com/ websitevalued.com’s page summary: Website Valued gives you an estimated value of your online business by profiling your website for technical information, keywords, public visitor stats and then comparing them to the database of previous site and domain sales.
Site could not find any public information about the site traffic, as a result asked for the monthly hits for the last 3 months. http://bizinformation.org/ bizinformation.org’s page summary: This is a free web-based valuation service, providing website information, visitor statistics and an estimated website value. Just enter a domain name into the box to view a full report. We try our best to provide accurate information, but this is not always guaranteed. Further research and confirmation of details is required.
Easy to use. Nice layout but ... the values seem a tad off. Though it would be nice if the page really was worth that amount. Has advertising banner with their estimated value of your site you can place on your site. http://www.dnscoop.com/ www.dnscoop.com’s page summary: Domain and site value tool.
Easy to use, decent layout. Not much useful information given. http://www.websitevaluecalculator.com/ websitevaluecalculator.com’s page summary: As an independent website or blog operator, it is in your best interest to always know if you are maximizing your site's earning potential through advertising, affiliate marketing, and independent advertising arrangements. This free tool will ananyze your site, and let you know how well it's being monteized, and what value you could sell it for.
Not really useful. Run time Errors on result page. site needs some work. Several areas of the page encourage visitors to sign up for services and with various groups, which may not be in the person’s best interest. http://www.yourwebsitevalue.com/ www.yourwebsitevalue.com’s page summary: Our Website Value tries to estimate websites value. Our Website Value Calculator will calculate websites value. Also find different listing of how much websites are worth.
Appears to process a lot of information but returns very little. The site pushes their services heavily but does not give much information about what to expect from any of the services or software (what it does and how it helps you). As a result I would avoid signing up for their mailing lists, downloading their tool bars or other software. http://www.valuemyweb.com/ www.valuemyweb.com’s page summary: ValueMyWeb uses an innovative approach to come up with your website value. Unlike other website calculators, Valuemyweb crunches through a lot of data to evaluate your website worth.Because it takes time to gather the data for your SEOorganic keywords, social media, and other relevant website information, we ask that you be patient while we calculate your report. When we are done collecting your organic keywords, social media and general website statistics, we will create a FREE WEBSITE VALUE REPORTand email it to you.
Not user friendly as well as spam potential. This site requires you to give them an email address in order to receive results (I used what I call my spam email account). To me this is sort of a pain as well as a major strike against them. Especially since they do not make any obvious statements about not selling the email address or how much future email they might send. If you use the site, I would suggest using an alternate email address/account that you do not use often and do not care if it is spammed. The email they send gives you a link to view the report they prepared. However, unless your site has heavy traffic it does not seem to give much useful information and even then it is not really that useful. Have fun checking out the "value" of your web sites, pages, and blogs. |
