A long time ago I learned, the hard way by passing up an opportunity, that sometimes even though one might not be ready for a good deal to fall in one's lap sometimes we just have to take it on faith that we can pull together the recourses and materials we will need to make everything work out.

That is exactly what happened to me this week (04/10/2007). While I have sort of talked about getting a little piece of land here in the Philippines, I wanted to set up some other things first and be a little more stabilized before I take on cleaning up and doing all that would be required to make a piece of property truly useable for farming.

However this week I had what I have to say is one of the most unique offers ever made to me. A family here has a reasonable size track of land, a around 2 hectares (about 5 acres). They are moving out of the area for a variety of reasons, kids going elsewhere, new job, etc., just a lot of good reasons for them to move from the farm. However, they want to maintain the land, keep it in the family name and at some future date be able to move back to the property.

Thus they want someone they feel like they can trust to take over the land, work it etc. So they offered me an agreement which says, in short, if I will basically cover their expenses I can use the land for 5 years (renewable every 5 years), until they are ready to take back possession of the land. At which point they have offered to pay me back the initial money I am letting them have for their move(s), plus fifty percent (50%) of any permanent improvements I make to the land during the time period. A few limitations do apply to the improvements but for the most part I can do most anything related to agricultural projects with the land.

Like I said earlier, I really was not ready to put a lot of money into farming at this time but with a deal like that how can I say no?

I am sure there are some that will say that Our Creator had nothing to do with this deal. I have only given the highlights of what all happened to get this deal to fall into place. If anyone truely understood everything that HAD to happen to make this come together from them to be at another person's house at the same time I was going there, to them being willing to make this kind of an offer. I have to tell you while I have believed in Our Creator, His Son and the Holy Sprit most of my life, all the things that happened with this truely amazes me.

While I dont understand the reasons all this is happening, it does show, if nothing else, that The Lord truly does work in Mysterious ways.

A little about the land.

The land is basically a small hill with a few fruit trees on it with some flat land around it which is very good for crops.

hill1.JPG - 32885 Byteshill2.JPG - 38542 BytesThe hillside itself needs a lot of work as it is somewhat overgrown since most of the worked land is in the lower flat areas.

hill3.JPG - 38359 Byteshill5.JPG - 42746 BytesA really nice point about the land is that it has a very good water source, though you cant see it in these pictures for all the water plants and over growth.

hillback.JPG - 34865 Byteshillfront.JPG - 29341 BytesThe primary crop area on the left is fairly large though not shown. The rice field on the right is not available for use at this time however later might become part of the land we can use.

For the first rounds of crops we will do 'normal' crops like rice, corn, peanuts, tomatoes, etc. As we get the hillside cleared we will start putting in herbs and spice plants to help show the farming community how these 'unique' crops can make a good income as well as help prevent soil erosion on the hillsides.

Later I hope to work out some contracts with groups for growing crops that they want/need, either as seed for other farmers or to groups which are processing the crops for food (for instance restaurants or food canneries).

Of course, some of crops we will be taking directly to some areas and people that truely need the food.

I will post updates as we make progress on the land and when I have a chance to get the updates on-line.
