As you probably already know I have been funding this project via my own funds and finances as I really prefer to be independent. (See: Who is funding this project. Note: link opens new window.)

I prefer to help people to help themselves. To me continually giving or receiving a handout tends to make people dependent rather than independent.

As with many of the things I do here, there is an underlying motivation to help others. In this case trying to break, or at least put a dent in, some of the dishonest practices that the farmers here have had to put up with for so very long. They have been continually "ripped off", because there was no other choice; there simply was no one else to deal with other than the people that are cheating them.

In this case we have been buying and selling rice.

Rice, as you probably already know, is a major part of the diet most people eat on a daily bases here in the Philippines as well as most parts of South East Asia.

As with many things here in the Philippines, corruption abounds in this market. In this case the problem we are attempting to break/hinder pronominally involves the dishonest buyers. Some buyers use inaccurate scales (some so bad it is visibly noticeable even with small weights). Others promising to pay one price, then when they return having many excuses for not paying the agreed upon price. From the quality of rice was much worse than they thought, to the "industry" has changed conditions so the price of rice changed to much to give the original higher price. Or any number of other excuses to justify paying a much lower price than promised.

Our logic, if the growers, millers, retail buyers have a choice they will prefer to work with someone that is being honest, with weights, prices and everything else. Until now their only choice has been who they are going to let cheat them (or who will cheat them the least).

We have been working in this industry for about a year, and have developed a good and solid reputation. My problem, if you can call it a problem, is that I simply do not have enough ready cash available to be able to keep up with the number of growers that want to work with us. Which is why I am now going to ask for your helping hand. Not a hand out, just a helping had.

In this case, I am asking for some cash assistance. But unlike most groups that ask for your money, I plan to return to you all the money you allow me to use (probably within six months).

Which is why our Motto for this section of the Philippine Project is:

“Helping people is a good thing.
Helping people
AND
getting your money back
is BETTER!”
